Leyendo El Mr. Picwick de Charles Dickens me he encontrado la siguente curiosdad en el capítulo 41, subtitulado: 
"What befel Mr Picwick when he got into the Fleet; what Prisioners he saw there; and how he passed the Night"

En este capítulo, Mr Picwick pasa la noche en The Fleet, una cárcel para deudores así llamada por encontrarse en Fleet Street. Al caer la tarde Mr Picwick se dedica a curiosear por una galería a la que daban "little rooms" con las puertas abiertas o entreabiertas. Esto es lo que ve en una de esas celdas:

"Here four or five great hulking fellows, just visible throught a cloud of tobacco smoke, were engaged in noisy and riotous conversations over half-emptied pots of beer, or playing at all-fours with a very greasy pack of cards" (pagina 666)

Pero lo interesante se encuentra en las notas del editor.

Nota número 3 al capítulo 41 (página 949)
all-fours. A card game in which there are four chances to score: High, Low, Jack, and Game.

Supongo que a los aficionados al mus, esto os suena.
